• “Vintner of the Year 2011”and 5/5 red grapes from Gault Millau
• 5/5 stars from Eichelmann
• 4/5 stars from Weinplus

Leitz was originally a family-owned winery that nobody know about until Johannes Leitz, who was at that time only 21 years old, made his first vintage in 1985. His dream and vision is to make the finest terroir-driven Rieslings. Starting with only 3 hectares, Johannes has steadily been acquiring all the top vineyards including the best sites on the Rüdesheim Mountain, the Berg Schlossberg, Berg Roseneck, Berg Rottland and Berg Kaisersteinfels, all with rocky soil rich with mineral. Since his reign, the quality of wines soars and now the Leitz winery is regarded internationally and nationally as one of the best in the Rheingau.

EINS-ZWEI-DRY RIESLING 2018

TASTING NOTE

Refreshing and fruity nose with nutty nuance. Lively acid, salty mineral and good concentration with good long finish. Jancis Robinson, “Leitz has found a formula for his dry estate wine that makes me forgive its corny title. With its successful combination of catchy name, fresh fruit, moderate acidity and ample body it serves to raise the profile of dry German Riesling and that has to be a good thing.”

DRAGONSTONE RIESLING 2018

TASTING NOTE

This juicy off-dry Riesling comes from a classified site called Rüdesheimer Drachenstein (German for Dragonstone) located high up on the South facing hill. The soil of losses-loam sandstone and quartzite lends a saltiness to the orange citrus-flavored wine which buffers the acidity and counterbalances the palpable sugar.

MAGIC MOUNTAIN RIESLING DRY 2017

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “The 2016 Rüdesheim Berg Roseneck “Grosse Lage” Katerloch has a bright citrus color with greenish reflections. Flinty, pure and precise but also perfectly ripe and intense on the (slightly reductive) nose, this is a rich and lush yet elegant, piquant and expressive Rüdesheimer Riesling with dramatic mineral tension and grip on the palate. This Katerloch has many Mosel features but comes from hard rock quartzite soils with slate and clay mixtures. It is pure, tight, intense and rich and will develop enormously well over the years in the bottle. This is the purest and probably the finest Berg Roseneck I have tasted from Johannes Josef Leitz so far. The finish is complex, tight and endlessly salty, as if you were tasting Riesling on the rocks. On the other hand, this is so sensual! Tasted two times in October 2017.”

BERG ROSENECK RIESLING GG 2015

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “Leitz’s 2015 Rüdesheimer Berg Roseneck Riesling Trocken Katerloch opens still a bit discreet, with stony/mineral rather than fruity aromas that indicate golden delicious apples, but those aromas do not have the intensity they normally have. Full-bodied, with finesse and trans- -parency on the palate, this is pure and elegant, pretty salty and piquant. It reveals a good and grippy finish. It is a persistent wine, but remains a bit closed and edgy at the moment.”

BERG SCHLOSSBERG RIESLING GG 2016

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “The citrus colored 2016 Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg “Grosse Lage” Ehrenfels exhibits an intense and smoky/flinty bouquet of crushed stones, currently intermixed with gooseberry flavors (probably coming from the 15 to 18 hours of maceration). This has a complex and juicy but still restrained bouquet that indicates a long aging capacity. Aged in stainless steel and large oak (1,200-liter), this is a powerful, round, lush, mouth-filling, charmingly aromatic and fruit-intense yet also elegant, structured and refined Berg Schlossberg. Fine tannins and vegetal-scented fruit (fennel, lovage) are found in the finish, indicating good aging potential. The Berg Schlossberg is more rich, wide-meshed and probably less fine than the fascinatingly pure and precise Kaisersteinfels, but the site benefits from significantly more sunshine and the nearness to the Rhine River.”

BERG SCHLOSSBERG RIESLING GG 2015

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “The straw-yellow 2015 Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg Riesling Trocken GG Ehrenfels is deep, pure and very complex on the nose, where crushed stone flavors are displayed along with dashes of lemon perfume and herbal flavors. Full-bodied, pure and every elegant on the palate, this is an exciting Riesling with great finesse and complexity, with melting rocks. The finish is tremendous and full of salt, grip and tension. This Berg Schlossberg is less rich and mighty than the corresponding cru from Kesseler, but reveals a great elegance, purity and finesse. An impressive Berg Schlossberg.”

BERG SCHLOSSBERG RIESLING GG 2014

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “The 2014 Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg Riesling Trocken Ehrenfels has an intense yellow color and offers an intense, highly complex and aromatic nose with exotic fruit aromas, precise herbal flavors and the beautiful iron note of the reddish slate in this exceptional, steep Grand Cru. Full-bodied, rich and intense on the palate, this is a highly complex, rich and powerful wine with rich, concentrated fruit. Very long and with a great aging potential. Bottled in August 2015.”

EINS-ZWEI-DRY RIESLING 2015

TASTING NOTE

Refreshing and fruity nose with nutty nuance. Lively acid, salty mineral and good concentration with good long finish.

Jancis Robinson, “Lightly spiced citrus and apricot, all still primary fruit. Attractively dry and streamlined on the palate, with a dry, stony aftertaste. Delicate but really persistent. Very good and good value. The 2011 was a previous Wine-of-the-Week.”

MAGIC MOUNTAIN RIESLING DRY 2015

TASTING NOTE

Jancis Robinson, “I used to think that the name Magic Mountain was just another corny marketing ploy, but recently learned to my amazement that local schnapps producer Underberg had registered the appellation of Zauberberg as a trade mark. Whatever they may turn out under that brand cannot rival the quality of the wine which dare not speak its name. A pure and cool minerality adds a touch of sophistication to the generous expression of fresh pear and grapefruit for a dry Riesling deserving of Erste Lage (Premier Cru) status.”

BERG SCHLOSSBERG RIESLING GG 2010

TASTING NOTE

Stephen Tanzer, “Peach pit, nut oil and persimmon on the nose. Sweet apricot fruit, toasted pine nuts and a salty minerality combine on the dense but austere palate. The very long finish displays aristocratic poise. A classical Rheingau in its more bracing, feminine style, this is one of the best dry rieslings of the vintage. ”
