"Stylistic vision and a fabulous trio of vinyards brought Schlossgut Diel to the forefront of German viticulture." - Robert Parker's Wine Buyer's Guide

The Diel family bought the castle Layern and its surrounding vineyards in 1802 and have been making wines ever since. But it was Armin Diel, the current owner, who made the estate famous in the late 1980s. This family estate owns 3 top sites in the Village of Dorsheim, the Goldloch, Burgberg and Pittermännchen, all were classified as Grand Cru in the historic Prussian Classification Map from 1901. Schlossgut Diel’s wines are famous for their finest and grace as well as their beautiful harmony between fruit and mineral. The wines are rich yet extremely delicate, a true expression of the estate’s “power without weight” style. Since 2006, Caroline Diel – the daughter of Armin who learned wine-making at Germany’s most famous wine university, Geisenheim, as well as at famous estates such as Château Pichon Lalande and Domaine de la Romanée Conti – has been responsible for the vineyard and cellar work. From then on, the already superb wines from this estate have become even more refined and elegant.

NAHESTEIN RIESLING DRY 2017

TASTING NOTE

James Suckling, “Very attractive apple, pear and peach aromas. Crisp but not tart with a lot of life, but also some real character at the finish. Drink now. Screw cap.”

GOLDLOCH GG RIESLING DRY 2017

TASTING NOTE

James Suckling, “The lovely apricot nose leads you into an extremely pure wine with super-fine apricots and a very long, almost weightless finish. Drink or hold.” Robert Parker, “The 2017 Goldloch Riesling “GG” is deep and subtle on the flinty, spicy and even (black) peppery, black currant and kumquat nose. Full-bodied, lush and crystalline on the palate, this is a highly refined, very elegant and juicy dry Riesling with a long and stimulatingly piquant as well as pure and salty, grippy finish. This is a highly expressive and refined Riesling of great class.” Jancis Robinson, “An animated fragrance tickles the nostrils with its herbal and peppery notes, but the agitated sensory perception is immediately calmed down on the palate by a rich and creamy texture. The taste of grapefruit, apple and green herbs takes us to a vibrant conclusion.”

GOLDLOCH GG RIESLING DRY 2015

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “The 2015 Goldloch Riesling GG opens super ripe, intense and concentrated on the nose, with ripe fruit and Mediterranean herbal aromas-like dried white bread with olive oil and rosemary flavors. On the palate, this is a rich, powerful though pure, complex and elegant Riesling with herbal flavors and a super ripe, concentrated fruit aroma in the finish. This wine is pure and
rich at the same time, and I wonder where it goes from here. The finish is long and intense, showing good grip and intensity. ”

Jancis Robinson, “A clean and green herbaceous freshness excites the olfactory perception, and on the palate zesty grapefruit and lemony acidity add their virtues to a truly vibrant Grosses Gewächs.”

PITTERMÄNNCHEN GG RIESLING DRY 2017

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “From weathered gray slate, the 2017 Pittermännchen Riesling “GG” shows exciting purity and clarity on the bright and mineral, flinty nose that intermingles ripe and concentrated Riesling notes with white currant aromas. On the palate, this is a lush and juicy, pretty intense and concentrated dry Riesling with a rich, slightly sweet texture but a tight grip as well. The finish is long and intense, well concentrated and very promising.” Jancis Robinson, “’Exhilarating fragrance of fresh green herbs and a hint of flint really clear the airways. Although the palate follows up these animated aromas with some green fruit and herbaceous notes, they are served on a soothingly creamy texture. Juicy acidity contributes to a harmonious finish.”

DIEL

BURGBERG GG RIESLING DRY 2015

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “The 2015 Burgberg Riesling GG has a pure and flinty bouquet with ripe fruit, bread aromas and herbal notes. Full-bodied and racy this is a pure, piquant and elegant Riesling with great balance, complexity and lingering salinity. It has very good aging potential.”

Jancis Robinson, “’Pass the salt, please’ is not a request you need to make with this Grosses Gewächs. The sheer mineral intensity of the Burgberg is almost overwhelming, but somehow Caroline Diel has managed to soften the rocky blow with a fine combination of grapefruit, lime and spices. For once the greener elements of spontaneous fermentation have to be content with a support role, but they play it well.”

RIESLING KABINETT 2014

TASTING NOTE

Jancis Robinson, “Herbs and spices shape the nose of this Kabinett, and although we are treated to a fresh expression of citrus fruit on the palate, it is that spicy touch reminiscent of cloves which gives this estate Kabinett its idiosyncratic character. Animating acidity keeps the finish lively.”

DIEL

GOLDLOCH RIESLING SPÄTLESE GL 2004

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “Diel characterizes the 2004 vintage as a “classic Spatlese year,” and, in fact, no facet of his current collection is any more formidable than the phalanx that follows. I admit it was hard to approach Diel’s 2004 Dorsheimer Goldloch Riesling Spatlese with an open mind and nostrils, given that site’s stellar performance thus far. I am compelled to report that all of the pure white peach fruit, creaminess of texture, elegance and poise of the Kabinett are enhanced with the effect of a light drizzle of honey and a dusting of piquant spice. Sheer density of “stuff” and ripeness of fruit are shown here to be compatible with ravishing delicacy.”

EINSWEIN RIESLING 2010 (375 ML)

TASTING NOTE

Absolute rarity from this top estate from the Nahe in Germany. The ice wine is only produced in a year where nature allows. The nose shows loads of ripe fruits, peach, manga and pineapple dipped in sweet honey. On the palate, very concentrated yet light and refreshing with great mineral backbone. Super smooth body with minutes-long finish.

EIERFELS RIESLING DRY 2015

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “The 2015 Dorsheim Riesling Trocken Eierfels is the selection of the Dorsheim grands crus Burgberg and Goldloch. It comes along as a pretty rich and intensely flavored Riesling with spicy/stony notes and ripe fruit aromas. Full-bodied and complex, this is a piquant and salty Riesling with impressive intensity and length. It is pretty accessible already.”

Jancis Robinson, “Second wine of two declassified Grosse Gewächse: Goldloch gravels, and Burgweg quartz. Cask sample. Piercing aromas and still undeveloped but it has all the ingredients for a really interesting future. ”

DIEL

BURGBERG GG RIESLING DRY 2013

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “The 2013 Dorsheim Burgberg Riesling trocken GG needs a lot of time or aeration to develop its full aromatic spectrum that intermixes limes and Indian curry with Williams pears, sweet herbal aromas and a deep and complex minerality. Full-bodied, clear and extremely racy, this is a very pure, tightly woven and quite austere Riesling with a persistent salinity and a powerful and piquant, tropical fruit finish.”

DIEL

GOLDLOCH RIESLING SPÄTLESE GL 2013

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “Bright golden-yellow in color the 2013 Dorsheimer Goldloch Riesling Spätlese is a medium-bodied, piquant, enormously salty and racy Riesling with a lovely fruit expression of pineapples and maracuja. It is very pure and really kicking, absolutely stimulating and, at the end of the day, a beautiful liquid drug called Goldloch Spätlese. The salinity here is so persistent that you can’t stop drinking.”
