Van Volxem

Mosel (Germany)

• Discovery of the year 2002” and 3/5 red grapes from Gault Millau
• “Vintner of the Year 2012” from Falstaff Germany
• 5/5 stars from Wein-Plus

Van Volxem’s wines were once one of the most expensive wines of the world and are recently on the way back to its glory time. The core philosophy of the winery is the concept of “Naturwein” or “Natural Wine” which is wines produced by nature with minimum human intervention. This means organic practices are utilised both in the vineyard and cellar and only natural yeast are used. The yield is very low and the harvest is very late starting around the beginning of November. All these result in very aromatic wines with beautiful fruit and mineral flavour at a very low alcohol. And it is a wine that matches perfectly with food especially white meats as well as spicy Asian and Thai food.

SAAR RIESLING 2019

TASTING NOTE

Very ripe grape for at least 30 years old vines in the finest steep slate sites bring a beguiling dry Riesling with a fruit cocktail of plum, elderberry blossoms and white peach. It’s an estate wine that has a long dry finish and perfectly defines in each vintage the value of our old vines and the mineral rich steep slate slopes of the Saar region. On the palate, the wine has a rich silky texture, concentration, length and finest.

ROTSCHIEFER RIESLING KABINETT 2017

TASTING NOTE

Jancis Robinson, “Even at Kabinett level you get no concessions at van Volxem to affability. Yes, we do have a delightful opening with zesty citrus fruit and pear, but they still have to work within the restraints set by serious mineral intent. There’s a tactile stony grip, which probably owes some of its cutting edge to its youth – the only 2017 in the line-up – but just when you begin to believe that there is no room for pleasantries, the Rotschiefer throws a lifeline with a parting note of subtle sweet-bitter orange.”

ALTE REBEN RIESLING 2018

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “The perfectly aromatic and concentrated yet transparent, elegant, fruity and stony bouquet of the 2018 Riesling Alte Reben leads to an intensely fruity, crystalline and slatey palate that develops remarkable intensity and length. The wine is powerful but fine, fresh and even crystalline but moderate in alcohol (12%). Tasted from AP #13 19 in June 2019.”

SCHARZHOFBERGER RIESLING GL 2014

TASTING NOTE

Scharzhofberger is an elegant wine with delicate, precise minerality that reflects the truly great terroir. The wine is invigorating and at the same time subtle. The wine from this magical site has a typical animating acidity that always requires another sip. With its charming aroma of ripe yellow fruits, apricot, quince, and mirabelle, interwinding with refreshing mint scent. This fine cru pairs perfectly with shell fish or fish.

ALTENBERG “ALTE REBEN” RIESLING GL 2018

TASTING NOTE

Jancis Robinson, “There is nothing ostentatious about the nose of the Altenberg, probably because minerality never smells as strongly as fruit. The palate opens with a delightful expression of good old-fashioned apple and pear flavours, served on a silky texture and finally wrapped in a mineral coating, which puts a cool soothing complexion on the long finish. Great Saar elegance.”

ALTENBERG “ALTE REBEN” RIESLING GL 2017

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker,“The 2017 Altenberg Riesling Alte Reben is lovely clear, bright and fresh on the nose and palate. Juicy, piquant and salty, this is a pure and very delicate but concentrated Altenberg with a long and intense finish. Tasted in Wiesbaden in August 2018.”

Jancis Robinson, “Fairly opulent rendition of Grosses Gewächs with immense concentration of ripe fruit well balanced by a generous amount of acidity. Lots of substance, not too dry.”

ALTENBERG “ALTE REBEN” RIESLING GL 2015

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker,“The 2015 Altenberg Alte Reben has a deep, very clear and flinty flavored bouquet of perfectly ripe and aromatic, yet relaxed fruits. Round, lush and intense on the palate, with a ripe and concentrated Riesling fruit, this wine has a very fine acidity and crystalline minerality. This is a remarkably delicate, yet intense and well-structured Riesling with a stimulatingly salinity and grip in the finish. This is long and complex, very clear and crystalline; it displays perfectly ripe and concentrated Riesling flavors. The Altenberg is among the best dry wines from the Saar.”

SCHARZHOFBERGER P RIESLING GL 2018

TASTING NOTE

Jancis Robinson, “You can sit on the fence or you can pick a winner. Winemaker Dominic Völk is the kind of genius who manages to extract the full potential of all the estate’s sites, but the Pergentsknopp just gets nose and palate ahead with a magnificent fragrance of warm hay, fennel, aniseed and generous yellow fruit, and that’s before you get to the salty essence of minerality that makes the taste buds tremble. Taut, compact, dynamic.”

SCHARZHOFBERGER P RIESLING GL 2017

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker,“The 2017 Scharzhofberger P Riesling displays a luminous citrus-yellow color and opens with an enormous concentration of perfectly ripe Riesling fruit intertwined with slatey notes on the deep nose. Highly finessed and sophisticated on the palate, this is a pure and frisky, salty, highly elegant and lovely Pergentsknopp with juicy fruit and very nice grip. This is a mouthful of Riesling—juice, finesse and salts. A great Scharzhofberger that is still yeasty and on the lemony side but will develop very well over the years in the bottle. Tasted in Wiesbaden in August 2018.”

Jancis Robinson, “Fresh, cool and invigorating from the first intake of breath to the last impression on a long finish. Taste the salt, inhale the herbs, feel the grip. Compact, tactile, truly dry – a monument. ”

SCHARZHOFBERGER P RIESLING GL 2015

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker,“From the Pergentsknopp parcel, the 2015 Saar Riesling Scharzhofberger P is super ripe and highly concentrated on the clear, fresh and flinty nose with crushed stones and lemon juice. Full-bodied, intense and elegant, this is a very complex and powerful Scharzhofberger. It shows great finesse and tension on the palate. The wine is pure, crystalline and vital, but also complex. It reveals a concentrated, very intense, long and tension-filled, aromatic finish. This Riesling is enormously stimulating and complex.”
