Van Volxem’s wines were once one of the most expensive wines of the world and are recently on the way back to its glory time. The core philosophy of the winery is the concept of “Naturwein” or “Natural Wine” which is wines produced by nature with minimum human intervention. This means organic practices are utilised both in the vineyard and cellar and only natural yeast are used. The yield is very low and the harvest is very late starting around the beginning of November. All these result in very aromatic wines with beautiful fruit and mineral flavour at a very low alcohol. And it is a wine that matches perfectly with food especially white meats as well as spicy Asian and Thai food.

Alte Reben Riesling 2022
TASTING NOTE
A great dry wine derived from the steepest slate layers. It is the perfectly ripening
of the small berries from 120-year-old vines, in this super location, that allow us to
experience the deep, dense, silky texture of this wine.
Falstaff, “Brilliant in colour. A scent of apricot, tangerine peel, lime, yellow pear,
smoke and wet stone. On the palate slate minerality and piquant acidity. Opens
up in the glass to reveal fruit and fine phenolics, mellowing and harmonising to
good effect. Nice length.”

Goldberg Riesling GG 2022
TASTING NOTE
Robert Parker “The 2022 Goldberg GG shows clear, fine slate spice with herbal
notes, but behind that, there is also elegant and concentrated fruit with hints of
lemongrass. Juicy, savory and salty on the palate, this is a dense Saar Riesling with
good tannin structure and compact length. It needs to develop further, though.
Tasted in Wiesbaden at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in August 2023.”

Volz Riesling GG 2022
TASTING NOTE
Falstaff, “Initially very closed on the nose, then opening with grape sugar, cassis,
green apple. The palate opens smoothly, then slowly reveals a juicy, continuously
concentrating acidity, the finish seems spicy, firm and particularly astringent, with
light notes of marc and mineral undertones.”
The “Volz” was a single vineyard until 1971, which now forms part of the Wiltinger
Braunfels. In the Prussian classification of vine locations in 1868, this vineyard,
bordering the Scharzhofberg, was classified as a Grand Cru, in the privileged
location class. The 60-year-old vines of this glorious slate slope create an exciting
firework display of mineral expressiveness and the finest fruity elegance.

Scharzhofberger Riesling GG 2021
TASTING NOTE
Robert Parker “Scharzhofberger Riesling GG opens excitingly pure, fresh and fine
yet also intense, wide and complex like a perfume; it has concentrated and crushed
lemons intertwined with slate, quartzite, coconut flakes and salted fresh pepper
aromas. Highly refined on the first attack, this is a rich yet crystalline, refined and
persistently salty Scharzhofberger with lemon-fresh astringency and fine tannin
grip on the palate. It is the finest and most complete Scharzhofberger GG in the
history of VV. This is a thoroughly amazing Riesling: sharp as a sword yet
benevolent like the first female Pope will be.”

TASTING NOTE
Robert Parker,“The 2017 Scharzhofberger P Riesling displays a luminous citrus-yellow color and opens with an enormous concentration of perfectly ripe Riesling fruit intertwined with slatey notes on the deep nose. Highly finessed and sophisticated on the palate, this is a pure and frisky, salty, highly elegant and lovely Pergentsknopp with juicy fruit and very nice grip. This is a mouthful of Riesling—juice, finesse and salts. A great Scharzhofberger that is still yeasty and on the lemony side but will develop very well over the years in the bottle. Tasted in Wiesbaden in August 2018.”
Jancis Robinson, “Fresh, cool and invigorating from the first intake of breath to the last impression on a long finish. Taste the salt, inhale the herbs, feel the grip. Compact, tactile, truly dry – a monument. ”
