Leitz was originally a family-owned winery that nobody know about until Johannes Leitz, who was at that time only 21 years old, made his first vintage in 1985. His dream and vision is to make the finest terroir-driven Rieslings. Starting with only 3 hectares, Johannes has steadily been acquiring all the top vineyards including the best sites on the Rüdesheim Mountain, the Berg Schlossberg, Berg Roseneck, Berg Rottland and Berg Kaisersteinfels, all with rocky soil rich with mineral. Since his reign, the quality of wines soars and now the Leitz winery is regarded internationally and nationally as one of the best in the Rheingau.

MALTERDINGER WEISSER BURGUNDER & CHARDONNAY 2016
TASTING NOTE
Jancis Robinson, “This is Huber’s ‘Bourgogne blanc villages style’ wine – they want to introduce burgundian quality tiers into their white range and this is the first vintage of this particular wine. 22 months on lees, all natural fermentation. This blend is 60% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Blanc, but they’re aiming for a 100% Chardonnay. One-third new oak, one-third two-year-old oak and one-third three- and four-year-old oak. Due to be released in the next couple of weeks. Wonderful green vineyard-peach flavours. Real energy. A slight shaving of oak spice on the nose and palate, but linear and racy and sculpted.”

MALTERDINGER SPÄTBURGUNDER 2016
TASTING NOTE
Jancis Robinson, “Bottled eight weeks before tasting. They follow the biodynamic calendar in the cellar but not in the vineyard. Made in used oak. This wine will be released in November 2018. Served lightly chilled which is very flattering. Fresh and sharp with elastic tannins that bounce the fruit back into the mouth. Bright and juicy and fun.”

ALTE REBEN SPÄTBURGUNDER 2012
TASTING NOTE
Robert Parker, “Huber’s 2012 Spätburgunder Alte Reben is a selection from averaging 40 years old vines cultivated on shell limestone soils including the top vineyards of the family domaine. Very delicate, fresh and pure aromas of dark berries along with floral flavors on the nose, this low-yielding Pinot (40 hl/ha) has significantly more expression than the Malterdinger. Beware that this wine also contains downgraded parts of the several Grosses Gewächs wines. Silky textured, dense and super balanced on the palate this full-bodied and well structured wine develops an impressive intensity in the long and refreshing mineral finish. “It is always a great pleasure to see how the density and intensity of the old German vines in lesser sites match perfectly with the fruity charm of our younger clones from Burgundy,“ says Julian Huber. The 2012 was made with 40% whole clusters.”

SOMMERHALDE SPÄTBURGUNDER R GG 2012
TASTING NOTE
Robert Parker, “The 2012 Spätburgunder GG Sommerhalde is very clear and coolish on the deep and aristocratic nose, which displays wild black berries and cherries, underwood, forest leaves and lemon juice. Firm and robust on the palate, less sweet and juicy than the Sommerhalde, this is more like an iron fist in a velvet glove. This wine is very thrilling, very long, full of tension, and with
expressive length and great aging potential. This is one of the most ‘Burgundian’ and best balanced wines you can find at this family estate, which blends 20-year-old 80% French Pinot clones with old German clones on deep clay soils.”

SCHLOSSBERG SPÄTBURGUNDER R GG 2011
TASTING NOTE
Jancis Robinson, “Pinot Noir almost at its deepest, plum shade with bright purple rim. The Schlossberg is probably Huber’s most powerful Grosse Gewächse rendition and with a fair grip and sound acidity it still shows an elegance and class beyond mere rippling Pinot muscles. Sweet cherries marinated in spice reflect the perfect ripeness of fruit, well balanced by tastefully toasted notes
of oak and a lively juicy character. The tannins do show their teeth at this early stage, but find a delightful sensory expression in delicate nuances of fine bitter chocolate and a sprinkling of white pepper. Long finish, great promise!”
