Jean Michel Gerin

Northern Rhone (France)

This estate was created in 1983 by Jean Michel Gerin, although it was not until 1987 that he began to bottle and sell their wine. The following year, in 1988 Gerin made his first purchase of vines in La Grandes Places. In 1996, Gerin added to his holdings with the purchase of land on La Landonne. In 2007 they began an extensive project of rebuilding the terraces and improving their drainage systems in their steep, rocky, hillside terroirs. This was followed by the planting of vines in the La Vialliere lieu dit that went into production with the 2007 vintage. Today, Domaine Jean Michel Gerin owns 12 hectares of vines in the Cote Rotie appellation. The domaine is going to remain a family affair as he is now joined by his two sons, Michael and Alexis Gerin.

CÔTE RÔTIE LA VIALLIÈRE 2013

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “The 2013 Côte Rôtie Viallière is another inky-colored beauty that exhibits loads of spring flowers, violets, scorched earth, and both black and blue fruits. Medium to full-bodied, plump, sexy and nicely concentrated, it has the hallmark purity of fruit of the estate and will drink well for 10-15 years.”

C. RÔTIE LES GRANDES PLACES 2016

TASTING NOTE

James Suckling, “Old vines, planted between 1924 and 1960. Super fragrant black stones and black pepper with a very, very spicy array of black fruit and hints of mocha (from 100 per cent new barriques). This has a super powerful core of tannin, built from the inside out. The small-berry power here is compelling – old vines favor skin over juice – giving intense black fruit and a
schist spark at the finish. Really pops! Pure, complete and wildly powerful. Best from 2024.”

C. RÔTIE LES GRANDES PLACES 2013

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “Inky purple/black in color, the masculine, mineral-laced 2013 Côte Rôtie les Grandes Places has the classic signature of this vineyard with its smoked dark fruits, coffee bean, and earthy aromas and flavors. Like the other Côte Rôties, it has a modern slant and is more medium to full-bodied than full-bodied, yet it has terrific purity of fruit, solid underlying structure, good mid-palate depth and a great finish. Give it a few years in the cellar and enjoy bottles over the following decade.

JEAN MICHEL GERIN

CÔTE RÔTIE LA LANDONNE 2016

TASTING NOTE

James Suckling, “Stony-mineral and flinty complexity here. This delivers a very taut, very compact and composed palate with tightly bedded tannins. Really dense and intense. The precision and spicy fruits are wildly compelling. Elegant with power here again! Sexy, pure syrah, matured in 100 per cent barriques, from a small 0.4-ha plot, planted in 1991. Barrel sample.”

JEAN MICHEL GERIN

CÔTE RÔTIE LA LANDONNE 2013

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “Easily the cream of the lineup is the 2013 Côte Rôtie la Landonne. Showing the modern slant that’s present in all of Gerin’s wines, it has terrific notes of graphite, black raspberry, spring flowers and high class oak. Medium to full-bodied, ultra-pure, seamless and with fine tannin, it shows the fresher, more elegant style of the vintage and should drink nicely for a decade.”

CÔTE RÔTIE LA LANDONNE 2012

TASTING NOTE

Wine Spectator, “Fresh and pure, with a supple feel to the aspberry, plum and black cherry coulis flavors, melding easily with light tobacco, bay leaf and singed balsamic notes. A light iron echo holds through the finish, which builds steadily with air in the glass, showing ample length and depth. Drink now through 2030.”
