ALAIN VOGE

Northern Rhone (France)

Since its inception, several generations ago, Domaine Alain Voge has always been a family domain located in Cornas. In 1958, Alain Voge joined his father to work on the small typical farm and decided to specialise in wine. At the time, it was an audacious decision: despite their history, the Cornas and Saint Peray appellations were forgotten sleeping beauties. Very quickly, he extended the vineyards in places which had remained uncultivated over the last 30 years and developed the sales of his bottled wines. Supported by his wife Eliane, he visited the best national and regional restaurants to make his wines known. Thanks to their quality and to Alain Voge’s creative approach, the domain’s reputation has rapidly increased. Yesterday, as today and tomorrow, the philosophy is to practice a hand made viticulture on the slopes of the Rhône right bank, dedicated to Syrah and Marsanne. Their wines are the expression of their terroir, for the pleasure of lovers, all over the world.

ST. PERAY FLEUR DE CRUSSOL 2013

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “Like with the Terres Boisées, the 2013 St Péray Fleur de Crussol was raised in mostly 400-liter barrels, with one-third being new. Its medium gold color is followed by terrific notes of white peach, white flowers, brioche and freshly crushed rocks. Full-bodied, rich and admirably textured, it stays fresh and lively on the finish, with good acidity. It too will drink nicely for at least 4-5 years.”

LES PEYROUSES 2017

TASTING NOTE

This is a great entry level 100% Syrah from a top producer in Cornas. The wine is inky red with elegant nose of ripe black fruits, plum black raspberry, licorice and spice. The acid is refreshing with multi-layers of flavours. The finish is long and lingering.

LES VIEILLES VIGNES 2016

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “In almost every vintage, it’s worth the price difference to step up to Voge’s Vieilles Vignes bottling. Certainly, the 2016 Cornas Vieilles Vignes is another huge success, with hints of cracked pepper and briars accenting red plums and then picking up licorice on the long, softly dusty finish. Full-bodied, concentrated and supple, it’s approachable now yet looks sure to evolve gracefully for at least a decade.”

Jancis Robinson, “More oak spice on the nose makes this a more user-friendly, approachable style than their Les Chailles. Rather delicious crunchy red fruit and yielding tannin that is drinkable now. Smooth, sophisticated, spicy finish.”

LES VIEILLES FONTAINES 2016

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “Looking much better than the sample I reviewed last year, the 2016 Cornas Vieilles Fontaines has come into its own. It’s still cedary but also mammothly concentrated in blackberry and plum fruit, all underscored by notes of crushed granite. Full-bodied and muscular, it’s elegant at the same time, with mouthwatering, juicy fruit and softly dusty tannins on the long finish.”

Wine Spectator, “Dark and winey, with a large core of steeped plum and blackberry fruit, infused liberally with sage, sweet tapenade, bay leaf and violet notes. The long finish pulls everything together into a dense but defined beam. Best from 2022 through 2040. 580 cases made”

LES CHAILLES 2015

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “As to the 2015 reds, I wasn’t able to taste the 2015 Cornas Vieilles Fontaines, but based on the showing of the Vieilles Vignes, I have no doubt it will be a sensational wine. As to the young vine cuvée, notes of wild herbs, peppered meats, garrigue, and sweet currants and blackberries all emerge from Voge’s 2015 Cornas les Chailles, and it has full-bodied richness
and incredible purity. As always, it has a polished, seamless style, yet it is 100% Cornas through and through. It should drink nicely in its youth and last for 15+ years.”
