Jean Marc Burgaud

Beaujolais (France)

“Jean-Marc creates some of the best Beaujolais wines that you can buy. His 2013 Morgon Côte du Py Cuvée James is one of the standout wines of the vintage: tensile, fresh, full of nervosité and joie-de-vivre and strongly recommended.” – Robert Parker

Jean Marc started his eponymous winery with his wife and partner Christine in 1989. He owns all of his vineyards with the majority being in Morgon’s famed Cotes du Py (13ha). The youngest of the vines are 50+ years old. He also owns an even tinier amount of Regnie and Beaujolais Village. The vineyards have not seen chemicals or non-organic inputs for 10+ years and work is done my hand and horse. Vineyard density exceeds 10,000 plants per hectare. In the cellar Jean-Marc uses no adjuncts with the exception of sulphur at bottling. Elevage is almost entirely in concrete with the exception of old barrique for the “Reserve”. Vinification is more in line with Burgundy (like J.P. Brun) than what is ‘normal’ in Beaujolais resulting in wines of not only finesse but also sneaky power and amazing longevity in the cellar.

BEAUJOLAIS VILLAGES “LES VIGNES DE LANTIGNIE” 2019

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “Offering up pretty aromas of blackberries, peonies and subtle forest floor, the 2019 Beaujolais-Villages Les Vignes de Lantignié is medium to full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, with lively acids, velvety tannins and a long, mouthwatering finish. As usual, this saw a short six- or seven-day maceration with whole clusters, followed by élevage in cement tank. Once again, Burgaud has produced a characterful and viscerally drinkable Beaujolais-Villages that exemplifiesall the merits—as well as the incredible value—offered by the appellation at its .best.”

MORGON LES CHARMES 2019

TASTING NOTE

The grapes for this dense Beaujolais Cru comes from vines with an average age of 83 years old grown in a granite area called « Les Charmes » in the west part of the cru Morgon. This wine has a deep ruby colour and nose with loads of red fruit flavour. On the palate, plenty of ripe delicious fruit and great minerality. The texture is round and smooth with great long lingering finish.

MORGON CÔTE DU PY 2018

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “The 2018 Morgon Côte du Py derives from both higher-altitude and lower-lying parcels, and it is a great success this year, offering up a lovely bouquet of dark fruits, cherries, smoked meat and licorice. On the palate, it’s full-bodied, ample and layered, with a fleshy and concentrated core, fine girdling tannins and succulent acids, concluding with a long and sapid finish.”

MORGON CÔTE DU PY “JAMES” 2016

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “Aromas of smoky plums, pomegranate, cassis, grilled meat and spring flowers introduce the 2016 Morgon Côte du Py James, a full-bodied, ample wine with more mid-palate amplitude and firm structuring tannin than the Javernières bottling this year. There’s a lot of concentration and substance to this Morgon, but it will demand some bottle age to melt away.”
