Marc Kreydenweiss Alsace

Alsace (France)

Born in Strasbourg in 1948, Marc Kreydenweiss is heir to a family of viticulturists who have lived in Alsace for 3 centuries. He has owned and managed the Domaine since 1971. In 1984, he made the decision to exclusively produce extremely high-quality wine based on a new type of expression, terroir. As a result, the wines have preserved the delicacy on which their reputation was established but now contain increased concentration, complexity and a taste that lingers longer on the palate. In 1989, these same requirements led Marc to introduce biodynamic cultivation at the Domaine. Using “homeopathic” treatments and practices, the soil remains alive and well balanced thus yielding healthy and high-quality grapes. !

LERCHENBERG PINOT GRIS 2015

TASTING NOTE

Bright golden yellow. The nose is intense and refreshing with ripe yellow fruits. On the palate, the wine is rich and full with very good mouthfeel which ends with a long and elegant mineral finish. It’s very young and already delicious; yet it will gain more complexity and drinkability laying in the cellar for 2 – 3 years.

WIEBELSBERG GRAND CRU RIESLING 2013

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “The 2013 Grand Cru Wiebelsberg Riesling was fermented and aged for three years in foudres (racked after two years from the full lees) and opens with a clear, fresh and pure, stony nose that still shows some leather aromas along with herbal and crushed stone flavors. On the palate this is a clear, greatly fresh and crystalline Riesling from red sandstone soils that reveals a mouthwatering salinity, juiciness and stimulating grip. The aftertaste is very
clear, aromatic and juicy, reflecting the great southeast-facing terroir and its characteristic salinity. This is probably one of the finest dry Rieslings being produced in Alsace in 2013, ready to conquer the Rangen of Zind Humbrecht and the Sommerbergs of Boxler.”

MOENCHBERG GRAND CRU PINOT GRIS 2014

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “From marly and sandstone soils, fermented and aged in demi-muids (600-liter), the 2014 Grand Cru Moenchberg Pinot Gris opens with an intense, deep and mineral nose of ripe and concentrated fruits with some lemon aromas. Full-bodied, fresh and round, with a lingering lemon flavor, this Pinot Gris has fine tannins, good acidity and good mineral grip in the finish. This is an elegant and complex, yet not extremely concentrated, dry Pinot Gris that was bottled unfiltered in June 2015.”

KASTELBERG GRAND CRU RIESLING 2009

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “From a very warm vintage but picked early – 2009 was Antoine’s first vintage he did without the help of his father Marcel who runs the family property in Nîmes – the 2009 Kastelberg Grand Cru shows an intensely yellow/white golden color as well as very ripe and intense fruit aromas (yellow apples, roast apples). Rich, lush and round on the first palate and definitely smoother than 2013 but still piquant and elegant, filled with tension, finesse and complexity towards the finish and provided with the same firm tannin structure of the 2013, the promising 2009 unfolds an impressive, tension-filled length but is still on an early point of its potential development and would surely benefit from some hours – or days? – of aeration. “The wine gains finesse and elegance with the years,
especially rich vintages like 2009,” promises Kreydenweiss before he went to get some liquid arguments from the family’s wine library…”

ANDLAU RIESLING 2013

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “From a late vintage and pink sandstone and a little bit of slate soils the 2013 Riesling Andlau includes the declassified grapes from the Clos Rebberg. Clear, ripe and spicy on the nose which reveals some untamed oak and leather aromas. Aromatic and seductive on the palate, with a good mouth-feeling and a piquant yet ripe acidity this firmly structured and terroir-driven Riesling is still closed and slightly untamed in the finish. Good potential though.”

CLOS REBBERG RIESLING 2012

TASTING NOTE

The wines was made from vines planted on the Villé Schist (gray/blue) without any chemicals. The vineyard is located on south-east terraces. This unique stone, the oldest in Alsace with over 500 million years, gives the Riesling a high purity, minerality and also great flint aromas.

CLOS REBBERG PINOT GRIS 2010

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “Smoky-sweet machine oil, kirsch, peach kernel, toasted hazelnuts, oceanic salinity and alkalinity a well as a hint of saffron fascinatingly mark the nose as well as the firm, full palate of Kreydenweiss’ 2010 Pinot Gris Clos Rebberg. This bottling’s salty, piquant persistence doesn’t quite bring with it the primary juiciness found in the present collection’s most successful offerings, but there is still impressive and zesty sheer persistence. Plan to revisit this in 2014 or 2015 but to tentatively keep revisiting through at least 2018.”

WIEBELSBERG GRAND CRU RIESLING 2008

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “It is only since the 2009 vintage that Antoine Kreydenweiss applies an extended élevage of almost two years or even longer, depending on the wine’s needs. The 2008 Riesling Grand Cru Wiebelsberg though was kept on the lees only for one year. Almost seven years old and from a beautiful vintage, the very well matured 2008 is a perfect amalgam of body, concentrated fruit, structure and mineral complexity. Bright and clear on the nose where dried white fruit aromas along with floral and stony flavors and confit de citron are displayed,
the wine starts with a lovely juicy attack on the palate, is round and dense yet pure and beautifully balanced thanks to the characteristic mouth-filling freshness.
Firmly structured this great Wiebelsberg unfolds a ripe and wellmatured fruit in the very long, piquant and salty finish. Serve this beauty with food and enjoy it over the next 8+ years.”

MOENCHBERG GRAND CRU PINOT GRIS 2011

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “The vines planted for the 2011 Pinot Gris Moenchberg Grand Cru in the early 1980s root in sandstone and marl soils. “The Moenchberg is a very good place for late harvest wines, but in 2011 we picked the grapes very early. We try to produce this wine as dry as possible but we don’t succeed in all the years”, says Antoine Kreydenweiss. The 2011, however, fermented nearly fully dry and was bottled with less than 5 grams per liter of residual sugar and 14% alcohol. Fermented in three 600 liter barrels it opens with a rich and intense nose of lemon aromas and some fumé flavors yet demands a lot of aeration to open up. Rich, intense and powerful on the palate, this fullbodied, round and elegant wine is creamily textured yet surprisingly fresh as well and provided with helpful oak tannins which built up the structure of this complex and persistent wine.”
