ST Urbans-hof

Mosel (Germany)

4/5 grapes from Gault Millau
4/5 stars from Eichelmann
5/5 stars from Wein-Plus

Nik Weis, owner of St. Urbanshof, took over the winery in 1997. He and his staff grow 33 hectares (82 acres) of Riesling in some of the finest sites of the Middle-Mosel and Saar. These vineyards demonstrate what has fascinated wine lovers for centuries. In the three “Grand Cru” sites (Leiwener Laurentiuslay, Ockfener Bockstein, Piesporter Goldtröpfchen) and three Village Sites (Wiltinger, Saarfeilser and Mehringer), Nik Weis and his team work year after year towards expressive and characterful wines. Today the winery exports to international markets and enjoys worldwide a great reputation for exceptional Riesling wines.

Nik Weis is a third- generation vintner who, along with his family, runs the St. Urbans-Hof estate. With roots burrowed deep at his winery home he’s traveled the world gathering knowledge of the international wine scene.

In 1997, after graduating winemaking school in Geisenheim, he took over the management of his family’s estate. Subsequently, as president of Leiwen’s Young Winemakers Association, he helped to foster an image reflective of the great wines of his native village.

Nik’s philosophy has been to produce authentically great Mosel wines reflecting terroir and providing pure pleasure.

BOCKSTEIN RIESLING KABINETT 2016

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “The 2016 Bockstein Kabinett displays intense and generously ripe fruit with very fine slate and floral aromas in the background. The wine is piquant and racy on the palate but also lush and refreshingly mineral, much leaner and straighter than expected and also dryer, purer and salty. Very stimulating and with great aging potential. A gorgeously crystalline and mineral Kabinett with nicely bitter grapefruit flavors in the aftertaste.” Jancis Robinson, “There is no such thing as ‘only’ a Kabinett when it comes to the heady fragrance of the Bockstein, which brings together the finest of local fruit and – although it’s hard to extract single constituents – gooseberry, peach and apricot lead the charge. The true art is to transcribe this fruity melee to the palate in a light and lively manner befitting a first-class Kabinett. At St Urban-Hof they manage that with ease, adding the merest spritz to a charming sweetness, a citrusy acidity keeping an animating influence on the finish.”

BOCKSTEIN RIESLING KABINETT 2012

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “Very clear, pure, fresh and spicy on the nose, the 2012 Ockfener Bockstein Riesling Kabinett reveals floral aromas of white peaches, lemons and brown sugar. Nicely juicy and piquant on the palate, this is a stimulating, salty and tension-filled Riesling, clear, lean and electrifying.”

Jancis Robinson, “The customary spices of the Bockstein add a little extra intrigue to the fragrance of ripe yellow fruit. On the palate citrus fruit and spice are partnered by a refreshing touch of gently bitter peel, possibly an herbaceous remnant of spontaneous fermentation. A very restrained measure of residual sugar leaves plenty of room for spices and fruit to shine, a deft touch of acidity completing a successful interpretation of lively Saar Kabinett. ”

LAURENTIUSLAY GG RIESLING 2011

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “Orange blossom, peony, iris, zesty pink grapefruit, and dusty intimations of crushed stone and lees lead to a polished, buoyant, soft palate loaded with juicy grapefruit and melons allied to peppermint tea infusion and boasting transparency to a shimmering sense of crystalline, crushed stone, alkaline, and saline interaction. The stony and diversely zesty notes of citrus rind help invigoratingly extend the finish, which proves cleansing, refreshing, and vivacious despite this wine’s incredibly low 4.9 grams total acidity. The fermenting tanks were allowed to rise in temperature to successfully encourage spontaneous fermentation all the way down to 6-7 grams of residual sugar…they gave only one portion of this Grosses Gewachs a two-month stay in newish wood lest its effect be too noticeable.”

GOLDTRÖPFCHEN RIESLING AUSLESE 2013

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “The 2013 Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Auslese (AP #25 14) opens with a very delicate, highly noble and elegant bouquet and this impression is repeated on the palate where this focused and delicately piquant noble sweet Riesling reveals a fascinating finesse and elegance and intertwines juicy pineapples with salty minerals. Absolutely delicious!” Jancis Robinson, “Every year I seem to find different qualities in St Urbans-Hof’s Goldtröpfchen Auslese, and for the 2013 vintage they have assembled an amazing concentration of tropical fruit, from mango to papaya and passion fruit to orange. At the same time the wine still exhibits a zesty vibrancy, which banishes any danger of cloying on the finish. The aftertaste lingers almost forever, allowing you to appreciate the more subtlecomponents masked by the sheer impact on the early and mid palate.”

GOLDTRÖPFCHEN RIESLING AUS. GL 2014

TASTING NOTE

Robert Parker, “The 2014 Piesport Goldtröpfchen Auslese (AP #22) was picked late with more than 100° Oechsle and offers a concentrated, ginlike bouquet that leads to a concentrated, piquant and intense palate. The palate shows juicy, sweet fruit and a salty, racy finish with grip and tension. Bottled with 9% alcohol and less than 80 grams of residual sugar, this wine should be cellared for ten to 15 years. ”

Wine Spectator, “Lush, ripe and rich, with concentrated flavors of peach, green tea and tarragon that are loaded with plenty of spice. Creamy midpalate, featuring a finish of slate and dried green herb. Powerful and very suave. Drink now through 2040. 600 cases made.”
