Le Pas de l’Escalette is the historic trail linking the Mediterranean plain to the high Larzac plateau. Sandwiched between the warming Mediterranean and the cooling northern mountains, Larzac is blessed with an ideal mesoclimate for indigenous grapes Carignan, Grenache and Syrah. That makes for a longer, tempered ripen-ing season and grapes that retain their balance and acidity. Julien Zernott and Delphine Rousseau acquired this estate in 2003. He was well established in the Loire Valley as a consulting oenologist. They work by hand, avoid chemicals in favour of plant-based vine treatments. They plant in limestone-rich north-facing vineyards that permit the crafting of wines with a degree of freshness to complement their Mediterranean warmth. Equal to the rugged terrain and dramatic scenery, the wines of Pas de L’Escalette are elegant, rounded and well balanced. They display wonderfully fresh and fragrant savoury aromatics.

TASTING NOTE
Made from Carignan Blanc, Terret Bourret and Grenache Blanc, the 2015 IGP Pays D’Hérault Les Clapas Blanc is a racy, exotic and crisp white that has classy notes of white peach, green citrus and a touch of flowers. It’s a perfect hot summer day drinker, as well as a wine that will shine with seafood.

TASTING NOTE
This is a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 20% Carignan from wines grown on very rocky soil at high elevation. The wines is refreshing and lively with nose of red berry, black fruits and fine spices. On the palate, the wine is soft with moderate tannin and a good long lingering finish. A wine to be enjoyed with friends and a good meal.

Beautiful and elegant nose of red fruits, wild flowers and herbs. On the palate, delicious fruits with refreshing acid. Delicate and moderate tannin with soft smooth texture. Great balance and freshness. Elegant long fruity and mineral finish.

For Delphine and Julien Zernott, Le Grand Pas represents the pinnacle of their Languedoc adventure. Originating from a single site called Le Caillou at 400 m high with very stony soil of clay and limestone. The wine offers a striking mix of dark fruit, raspberry, blackberry and cassis with mineral nuances of crushed rock. While there is structure to last a decade, the wine displays remarkable transparency and finesse. If there were a Grand Cru designation in the Languedoc, this parcel would easily classify. Annual production 8,000 bottles.

Robert Parker, “The 2013 Terrasses du Larzac Les Clapas is a beautiful, medium-bodied, elegant effort that offers lots of spice, dried flowers, violets and licorice in its Provencal, savory profile. It has good mid-palate density and a great finish, and should evolve nicely for 4-5 years, probably longer. The blend is 50% Syrah, 30% Carignan and 20% Grenache, all of which
spent 14 months in oak tanks.”
